Do you want to feel more at home in your own life?
Say hello to skillful living.
Do you pick the fight or stomach too much? When you start to have emotions crop up that are difficult to understand or be with, do you play whack a mole? Have you noticed that things you don’t want to “deal” with are dealing with you?
A Skills Based Approach to Therapy
So what are we going to do? We are going to work collaboratively, using scientifically validated treatment interventions to guide you back into your life. You will learn the skills you need to change your relationship to your emotions and impulses, balance acceptance and change, and enhance relationships with yourself (including your nervous system) and others.
Take a moment to think about the idea of control. Some of us need to get a little more control of things in our lives. Maybe that’s learning to slow down your impulses, get to the heart of what the feeling is, or learn to accept emotions and change emotionally driven behavior. For others, the problem is having too much control over things. This could look like having an overly rigid set of rules for how you navigate life or how you think other people should act. When this is the case, the result is emotional loneliness, difficulty trying new things, being open, struggles with perfectionism and inflexibility.
Here’s the thing about living skillfully- it’s not a one size fits all. It’s personalized to where you are at right now, how you would like to see your life change, and who/how you want to be in the world. Focusing on identifying and living your values will be apart of this journey. When you are imperfect and fumble (as we all do), you’ll have the support to develop greater understanding of what is contributing to the problems you are facing today and the opportunity to be part of the solution.
Evidence based treatment practices include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). If you’re unfamiliar with these treatment approaches, that’s okay! As a prospective client you will have the chance to learn about them and implement them, getting you a step closer to where you want to be.
